Easter patterns are kinda my jam. It was always one of my favorite holidays growing up. And when I started designing crochet patterns, my first pattern was an egg bunny!
Recently I have been working on a Retro Granny Stitch line and with less than 2 weeks to go to Easter this idea finally dawned on me!
Now, due to the egg shape the way it is worked is a bit unconventional. But everything is pointed out and explained in the pattern below!

While this pattern teaches you how to create this coaster with the materials and instructions provided, it does not teach you how to crochet the stitches. Here are the skills and stitches you will need to complete this pattern.
- Basic crochet stitches that are listed in the Pattern Key above (Chain, HDC, DC, SLST). As well as joining and fastening off your work.
- Crocheting in joined rounds
There is no video tutorial for this pattern (just for a few optional techniques) But, if you need help with the stitches and techniques before starting, there is tons of video tutorials on YouTube.
And of course, feel free to contact me here on my blog or by email at kathyskozies@gmail.com
Please be sure to read through the entire pattern first to avoid any confusion!

Sizing:
As written the egg will be approximately 5” x 4.5”. A little bigger or smaller depending on the thickness of your yarn.
For a smaller egg for bunting, go down to and F or E hook when using worsted weight yarn.
Pattern Notes:
- Pattern begins with a Magic Ring, If you are not familiar or comfortable with that CH4 and join to form a loop and work the first round in the loop.
- CH3 counts as a DC throughout.
- The CH spaces vary between 1 and 2 Chains throughout. They are essential to the shape and the ability of the coaster to lay flat. BE SURE TO CAREFULLY READ EACH ROUND!
- When working with one color, you will make your first cluster in the SAME SPACE AS THE JOIN until Round 4, then you will start in the next space. This is outlined in the pattern and is important to the overall shape of the coaster.
- This pattern does not follow the normal repetition pattern for granny stitch projects due to the shape. For instance, normally corners are worked only in corners and in this pattern that is not the case. BE SURE TO CAREFULLY READ EACH ROUND!
The pic above is to help you see the stitches in each Round better!
Pattern:
Round 1: In MR, CH3, 2DC, CH2, 3DC, CH2, 3DC, CH2, join to first. (15 ST or 3 DC clusters + 3 CH2 spaces)
Round 2: CH3 + 2DC in same space as join, CH2, (3DC + CH2 + 3DC) in next sp, CH2, (3DC + CH2 + 3DC) in next sp, CH2, 3DC in same join space as first cluster, CH2, join to first. (30 ST or 6 DC clusters + 6 CH2 spaces)
Round 3: CH3 + 2DC in same space as join, CH1, 3DC in next space, CH1, *(3DC + CH2 + 3DC) in next sp, CH2* Repeat from * to* once, (3DC + CH2 + 3DC) in next sp, CH1, 3DC in next sp, CH1, 3DC in same sp as join, CH2, join to first. (46 ST or 10 DC clusters + 6 CH2 spaces + 4 CH1 spaces)
In the next Round if you are changing colors, disregard “SLST until you get to the next CH1 sp” at the beginning and just simply attach your yarn in the next space.
Round 4: SLST until you get to the next CH1 sp, CH3 + 2DC in same sp, (CH1, 3DC) over next two sp, CH1, (3DC, CH2,3DC) in next sp, CH1, 3DC in next sp, CH1, (3DC, CH2,3DC) in next sp, (CH1, 3DC) over next three sp, 5DC in last sp, CH1, join to first. (52 st or 11 3DC clusters +1 5DC cluster+ 2 CH2 sp + 10 CH1 sp)
****Round 5 below is the boarder round, this will smooth your egg out and solidify the shape.****
Round 5: CH1, HDC in same st, HDC in next 11 st including CH1’s, 2HDC in next 3 st, sk CH2 sp, 2HDC in next 3 st, HDC in next sp, HDC, 2HDC, HDC, HDC in next sp, 2HDC in next 3 st, sk CH2 sp, 2HDC in next 3 st, HDC in next 14 st including CH1 sp, 2HDC, HDC, 2HDC, HDC, HDC in last CH1 sp, join and fasten off. (65 st)
Optional Round 6: if your yarn is on the thinner side like the yarn I am using in these pattern pics, you may opt to do a Round of SLST. This will stiffen up the project. I recommend going up at least one hook size to do this. Two sizes if you SLST very tightly.
I did NOT have to do this with the other examples in this post bc the yarns were more of a traditional Weight 4.
Weave in all ends and put under your favorite coffee mug, candle or even a small plant!
