This pattern was originally released in 2020 and is now available for FREE here on my blog! A special thank you to Elizabeth of MEP Handmade for providing a fresh look at the pattern and new photos.

When I had finally designed this purse, the idea had been floating in my head for a few years. The design changed several times, but ultimately I was able to step outside of my comfort zone and design this child’s purse. Perfect for Easter or Spring in general.

You have several choices in this pattern from staying simple with one solid color or getting more technical by changing colors and adding ribbon and button details. Completely up to you so its perfect for the beginner and the more advanced.

Pattern Notes:

• PLEASE READ THROUGH ALL INSTRUCTIONS PRIOR TO STARTING. Especially if you will be using 2 colors.

• Purse is worked in joined rounds. CH1 and CH2 DO NOT count as first stitch.

• CH 4 counts as first treble and is noted in the pattern.

• The first Round is made by making a chain and then working on both sides of the chain.

• When changing colors, each color will be a block of three stitches. Each row will indicate “start
with color A or B”. You will start with the indicated color and alternate every 3 stitches.

• If you wish to make a solid color, ignore the color changing indicators.

• If you do not wish to add a ribbon round, follow prompts to skip that.

Changing Color Instructions:

You can view this YouTube Video on how to change colors and carry the yarn in this pattern or follow the written instructions below.

Tip: if one of your two colors is variegated, it looks better as color B (predominantly front Post).
If you decide to make the multi-color version, you will be changing colors when indicated every 3 stitches. In the third DC stitch of a set, you will be pulling up the new color as the last loop you pull up in the stitch as shown to the right.

You will need to carry the contrasting color with you though and behind each stitch. This is slightly different than what you would normally do, because you are dealing with back post and front post stitches.

Keep in mid after each set of three before you pull up the next color, pull it taught through the last three stitch’s so it’s not loose on the inside.

When you get to the end of the round, if you are starting with a new color on the next round change colors in the last stitch before joining.

Keep your yarn neat and separated, it will tend to twist quite easily.

Round 12: (start with color B) Repeat Round 6Round 13: (start with color B) Repeat Round 6

Round 14: (switch to color A and use for the entire round and remaining rounds) Repeat Round 6

Round 15: CH1, SC in each stitch. Join to first stitch. (42)

Round 16: CH2, BPDC in each stitch. Join to first stitch. (42) Skip below to the strap round.

Strap Round:

This round is also where the button loop is created.

CH50-100 depending on how long you’d like the strap. In the back bumps of the CH, DC in second CH from hook and all the way to the end. SS into first DC of previous round. *For a thinner strap, use SC’s instead.

Now SL ST in each DC of the last round until you get to the opposite side, bring end of strap down behind DC stitches and attach it with SL ST across two stitches. SL ST down the back side of the purse (if adding a button loop, in the 11th stitch, CH10 and SL ST in same stitch) and fasten off when you get to the beginning of the strap.

Secure and weave in all ends.

Finishing

Adding a ribbon:

Cut ribbon to 3x’s the width of the purse.

Insert ribbon as shown between the 9th & 10th Stitch on the side you want the bow to be. Then go under 3 stitches then over 3 stitches. Do this all the way around until you get back to the front. There will be 3 stitches left in between the two ends. Tie into a bow and trim the ends.

Adding a button:

Add button to the opposite side of your loop. Center it over the 3 middle stitches of the last round.
